Advances in Genetic Engineering: Opportunities, Risks, and Impact on Chinese Families Globally

May 31st, 2018

Our ability to sequence genomes, essentially identifying all components of our DNA, combined with big data analysis and technologies that will allow us to edit DNA, have profound implications on human health and longevity. Opportunities abound in career and professional development, investment and philanthropy.

In this seminar, specifically designed for Boston area Chinese students, professionals and their families, we introduced cutting edge genetic engineering technologies that will cure disease, enhance well-being, effect age-reversal and perhaps create "designer babies". We explored unprecedented ethical, social, legal and behavioral challenges related to the applications of these technologies.

Dr. Ting Wu described breakthroughs in genetics research and its applications. Investment and career opportunities in biotech and the business of genetics were addressed by Drs. Preston Estep, Parastoo Khoshakhlagh, Chris Kim and Christine Armstrong. Florence Tsai, MBA, MPH and Ronnie Stangler, MD explored the impact of genetic information on families of wealth. Dr. Marnie Gelbart introduced the Personal Genetics Education Project (pgEd), who focus on the need for universal genomics education, as well as equity issues of access and opportunity. Cultural and generational differences were interwoven throughout the program.

Experiential exercises facilitated audience immersion into this fascinating world of what comes after what comes next, when the prime limiting factors appear to be imagination.
